this will be safer than concrete in the event of
any settlement or slips of the general mass of the dam and is
also cheaper.
The roadway over the top of the dam will
form part of the Shaukiwan Road diversion.
The byewash is taken as 300 feet in length
excavated out of the hill-side. A very large amount of excava-
-tion will have to be done in order that the overflow may have
a free run off.
The enlarging of the Fumping Station to
Įtake two more engines and purps, each capable of lifting two
million gallons a day, will bring the power of the station up to
six and a half million gallons a day which is as much as this
Ireservoir can be expected to yield.
An additional rising main will be required
in order to pump this quantity of water without an undue amount
of power being wasted in friction.
The duplication of the rising main will
also be valuable as a stand-by when a pipe bursts.
The diversion of the Shaukiwan road will
commence at the junction of the new road (now in course of
construction) and the Stanley Road, contour round the hillside,
across the earth dan and then follow the stream on the opposite
side of the valley to that on which the existing road runs.
This road diversion will be much shorter
than the existing road and it can have easier gradients.
The estimate for these works is quite rough
and has been prepared on general lines.
it is probable that a tender agreeing with
these prices could not be obtained and that these works could be
carried out cheaper and more expeditiously by administration.
